IDK goes Greek: Visit to the State Collection of Antiquities in Munich
Doctoral Students Gain Insights into Iconography and Writing in Ancient Greece
14.01.2026
As part of Introductory Seminar I of the second funding period, the doctoral students of the IDK Philology had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of ancient Greece. During a visit to the State Collection of Antiquities in Munich, which had been accompanied by introductory texts on the provenance of the collection against the backdrop of Archaeohellenism in the Kingdom of Bavaria, the group had the opportunity of gaining insights on the role of writing in interaction with materiality and visual language, all against the historical background and use of the artefacts. From the battle for Troy to the makers' marks, the vessels on display and the exquisite illustrations on them provided a vivid insight into Greek antiquity and raised various comparative questions for the doctoral students from different disciplines, ranging from the use of the vessels to technical aspects and the interplay between image and writing.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Markus Löx and the team at the State Collection of Antiquities in Munich!
