Academic Retreat of IDK Philology with Regal Ambiance

27.01.2026 – 28.01.2026

To conclude the first semester of the second funding phase of the IDK, the participating philologists met at Fürstenried Castle on 27 and 28 January for an academic retreat. The doctoral students had the opportunity to present their doctoral projects and initial progress to supervising PIs, alumni, and each other for the first time, as well as to discuss them constructively in a plenary session.

In addition to the project presentations, a panel discussion on “The Future of Philology” was held on Tuesday evening, featuring Prof. Susanne Reichlin, Prof. Beate Kellner, Prof. Holger Gzella, Prof. Vincent Tournier and IDK alumni Korinna Gonschorek, Simon Haffner, and Luis Schäfer. The participants debated the significance of philology in times of global crises, political uncertainty and artificial intelligence, and presented a hopeful look at the future of the discipline.

The evening concluded with a festive farewell to the alumni, who reviewed their experiences at the IDK over the past few years in panel discussion on the topic “Mastering Philology ‒ Insights from IDK”. Doctoral students had the opportunity to learn about their predecessors' experiences during their time at the IDK and to ask for advice about their doctoral studies. In addition to the official programme items, there was plenty of time for further networking and exchange be-tween all members.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Schloss Fürstenried, the organising team. and all those involved for their exciting and varied contributions!
